Our finest hour - relived!
THE draw for the fourth round of the Powergen Challenge Cup has revived memories of Leigh's finest hour.
Almost 35 years ago to the day since the massive underdogs from Hilton Park pulled off one of the biggest-ever Wembley Final upsets by beating the aristocrats from Headingley, Leigh and Leeds will meet again in the games' most famous competition.
The Centurions' reward for an 80-0 whitewash of Russian part-timers Strela Kazan is a home tie against the Super League giants and last season's beaten finalists Leeds on April 2.
Coach Tony Benson's wish for a home tie against a Super League side was granted when Martin Offiah and Shaun Edwards made the fourth round draw on Monday night.
"I know I asked for a Super League side at home - but didn't expect to be matched up against one from the top four," he said.
"It's a fantastic challenge for us. We've made great strides as a team and a club since before Christmas and this gives us a massive incentive to show the rest of game just what improvement we've made.
"The timing of the game couldn't be better for us either. We've now got the best part of three weeks to prepare for it and it gives us a great lead-in to the start of the league campaign the week after the tie.
"All the players have got something special to aim for; I know they'll all want to play against Leeds and that will keep competition for places red hot over the next two games.
"We'll be massive underdogs but that doesn't worry us in the slightest. All the pressure will be on Leeds to perform. All we want to do is see if we are capable of taking our game up another level."
But Benson won't even think about Leeds until after the group stage of the Northern Rail Cup is completed over the next two weekends.
"Drawing Leeds won't make us lose our focus. We've still got challenges ahead against Blackpool and Swinton," Benson said.
"We've set ourselves goals of finishing top of the group and with the best defensive record in the competition."
Jules O'Neill and Dean Gaskell will return against Blackpool at Hilton Park on Sunday after missing the last two games through injury. But Adam Hughes, who damaged a hamstring two weeks ago, isn't likely to be risked. Another hamstring victim, prop Richard Moore, hasn't been ruled out after showing improvement earlier in the week.
